Joan Armeni: You must strive for the championship in Real Madrid. Drogbaeto O Borgbacante is my idol
In an exclusive conversation with Rolling Stone Africa, Joan Améni shares his views on football, fashion, family and the future, and reminds us that greatness based on authenticity will always resonate stronger. Not only is he playing football, he is also rewriting the narrative of the sport for Africa and the world.
"Rolling Stone Africa": You have reached the highest level in both the club and the national team. What do you think is the most decisive moment of your career so far?
This is hard to say. I feel very lucky because I have achieved a lot. But if I were to choose one, I would say it was my first day in Real Madrid. To me, it's the largest club in the world. It is very important for me to have the opportunity to play for them and enjoy every moment.
"Rolling Stone Africa": You are now playing for Real Madrid, and you just mentioned that this is the largest club in the world. How does playing football here have to do you compared to your days in Monaco or Bordeaux?
This is a different level. As we said, this level is different. Apparently, Monaco and Bordeaux helped me to be who I am today. But Real Madrid is different. This requires a higher level of concentration, dedication and loyalty, as well as fans from all over the world. In every game you have to fight for victory and to win the championship. This is simply a dream come true.
"Rolling Stones Africa": As a midfielder, you are often called the brain of the team. How do you prepare for important competitions, especially in international competitions?
I think every game has its own story. But I do work with my psychological coach before each game and be mentally prepared because each game is very emotionally and psychologically challenging. So I try to stay focused and strive to be the best.
"Rolling Stone Africa": Many football players will admire other players during their growth. Who did you admire when you were a child?
I can't say how good my father is (laughs), but as I said, he is my role model. But when I was a kid, I did worship some players, such as Etoo, Drogba. In terms of midfielders, Pogba, Kante and Marklele. Yes, these guys.
"Rolling Stone Africa": What is it like to play football with a player you once admired?
As I said, it's incredible. I still remember my first day at the national team, and I had the opportunity to play with top players like Pogba, Griezmann, and Giroud. I study hard every day. Now we can call each other friends, which is amazing.
"Rolling Stone Africa": You talk about legacy. What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
This is a good question. I want to be unique. I think everyone has their own goals in life. Now, I am a football player and I enjoy every moment in my life. But I want to be a successful person. My parents used to tell me that no matter what I do, I must do my best, and at least strive to be the best self. If I were a model, a journalist or a football player, I would do my best.
"Rolling Stone Africa": You have always cherished your Cameroonian roots, how did your African traditions affect you?
Yes, my values have certainly been affected. The music I listen to and the food I eat. I go to Cameroon every two to three years to get together with my family. This undoubtedly helped me to be who I am today because I could see what was going on there. As I said before, I just wanted to help the community. We have a lot to do there. I believe that with the joint efforts of all Africans, we will make this continent better and better.
The theme of this issue of Rolling Stone Africa magazine is to build bridges connecting Africans and the world in Africa and the diaspora. You actually created a show called Bridge. How did this show come about?
My agent and I often have in-depth conversations. One day we thought, why not take these conversations and share them with everyone? I hope to see such content as I grew up. "The Bridge" is about connecting people, sharing stories, and hopefully inspiring the next generation. We are now taking it step by step, enjoying the process and working hard to develop. Our goal is always to connect people and make an impact.
Where do you want to end your career?
at the peak. Always at the peak. Hopefully, in Real Madrid, the largest club in the world.
What kind of person do you want to be remembered as?
as a pioneer. A person who brings new things and improves others. Not only through football, but through everything I have involved, whether it’s Bridge, my foundation, or my lifestyle. This is the legacy I'm building.
